St. Louis, MO – The U.S. Postal Service in St. Louis is gearing up for a busy day. Today is Tax Day, and taxpayers have until midnight tonight to mail their tax returns.
To accommodate last minute filers, lobby hours at the St. Louis Main Post Office downtown have been extended until 8 p.m. and curbside service until midnight.
Postal Service spokesman Mike Stancil says tax day is not far behind the Christmas season in terms of volume.
"Tax Day is the second busiest day of the year for us," Stancil says. "During the holiday season we handle up to 15 million pieces of mail in one day. So I can expect anywhere from 9 to 10 million pieces."
But Stancil says because Tax Day is little later than usual this year, fewer people are expected to wait until the last minute.
