Illinois' high court rules in favor of fired Cahokia officers

Springfield, Ill. – The Illinois Supreme Court has ruled in favor of two Cahokia police officers fired for living outside the Metro East village's limits.

The state's high court let stand a Mount Vernon appellate court decision ordering Cahokia's Board of Fire and Police Commissioners to reconsider the firings of Matt Steinkamp and Dean Bastilla.

Those men joined fellow officer David Heine in a 2004 lawsuit seeking reinstatement after the board determined they had lived outside the village.

The union and the village apparently already have signed an agreement to abide by any Supreme Court decision.

A Supreme Court ruling in Heine's case is pending.
