Meramec Community College removes asbestos

By Maria Hickey, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – Meramec Community College has closed the second floor of its Student Center for asbestos removal.

A roofing repair led to the decision to remove the asbestos immediately, although an abatement had been planned for this summer.

College President Lynn Suydam says it will be an inconvenience for the personnel that have been moved and students for several months.

Because we're a public institution and we bid out these processes it will take a little longer since this is an emergency move to do that and it's a costly operation, so we would expect to be out of service into April of next year, Suydam said.

Suydam says the Student Activities office, as well as the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families office were moved to the first floor.

The college is currently accepting bids for the work.
