The Great Divorce: The City-County Split of 1876

The Great Divorce: The City-County Split of 1876

St. Louis was one of the largest cities in the United States during Ulysses S. Grant’s presidency. However, city residents voted to close their boundaries, separate from the rest of St. Louis County and become an independent city. In this presentation, Historian/Curator Nick Sacco will examine the causes, context, and consequences of
the St. Louis City-County split of 1876. The program is free and will take place in the theater in the Visitor center. For reservations, please call (314) 842-1867 X230.
