Legal Roundtable: The Death Penalty, The Loop Trolley, Red-Light Cameras, Etc.

The state of Missouri carried out its first execution in nearly three years last week, after a delay caused by the need to develop new execution protocols. The execution of Joseph Paul Franklin in particular, and the new protocol in general, were both subject to multiple lawsuits.

With pending litigation, what's the future for the Delmar Loop trolley project?

Two different courts of appeals recently reviewed red-light camera cases in Missouri -  one in St. Peters and one in Ellisville. What do those rulings mean for the future of red-light cameras in the state?

Host Don Marsh talked with a panel of legal experts to explain these issues and more.

The panelists included:

  • William Freivogel, J.D., Director, School of Journalism; Associate Professor, Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, Southern Illinois University – Carbondale
  • Mark Smith, J.D., Associate Vice Chancellor and Director, The Career Center, Washington University in St. Louis
  • Sandra Johnson, J.D., Professor Emerita of Law and Health Care Ethics, Saint Louis University School of Law; Co-Author of "Health Law: Cases, Materials and Problems"

Other topics included:

  • Why Illinois murder case presided over by Judge Cook will be re-tried
  • Executive discretion under the Affordable Care Act
  • Missouri Supreme Court's decision to deny same-sex partner survivor benefits
  • Risk vs negligence in the case of a hot dog induced eye injury at a Royals game
