A crowd of protesters hold their hands in the air
St. Louis Public Radio

IN THIS EPISODE ... On the third anniversary of Mike Brown's killing, we share the story of three playwrights who penned monologues about their experiences as black men in America. This is the first of two shows we're using to explore art and activism during the month of August.

YOU SHOULD KNOW ... We got some special help with this episode, which features the work of writers Dennis Allen II, Nathan Yungerberg and NSangou Njikam. They were part of a group of writers who wrote plays three years ago after Ferguson. Their pieces were then adapted for radio.

In fact, what you hear in this episode are selections from a 45-minute drama called Hands Up produced by Judith Kampfner of Corporation For Independent Media for BBC Radio 4. It was adapted from a stage production curated by Keith Josef Adkins of New York's New Black Fest. The production continues to be performed around the country and the plays are published by Samuel French Inc.

Kameel Stanley co-hosted and co-produced the We Live Here podcast—covering race, class, power, and poverty in the St. Louis Region—from 2015 to 2018.
