St. Louis teenager a finalist for "Women of Valor" award

By Maria Altman, St. Louis Public Radio

St. Louis – A St. Louis native is among ten honorees for L'Oreal's "Women of Worth" award.

Simone Bernstein was nominated for her website stlouisvolunteen.com, which helps area teenagers find volunteer opportunities.

The honorees each received $5,000 to pass along to charitable causes. Bernstein, 18, gave the money to the Magic House, where she started an annual fair for volunteer opportunities.

"And with that money we will look toward expanding that fair and encouraging other cities to hold similar fairs," she said.

A public vote - which is open at womenofworth.com until November 24th - will decide which of the 10 women will be the national L'Oreal honoree, which comes with a $25,000 prize.

Bernstein said she would use that money to expand volunteer opportunities for urban youth.
