Jefferson City, Mo. – Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster says residents threatened with foreclosure can now get information from his office on what they need to do to avoid losing their homes.
Koster told reporters today that his office has received nearly a hundred complaints in the last month from homeowners facing foreclosure. He says most of the complaints involve documents being requested by loan handlers.
"Almost all of the callers have complained that loan servicers are telling them to send large amounts of documentation, which these callers claim to have then done, only to be told later that the servicer can not now find the documentation, and the consumer must send (them) again," Koster said.
Links have been added to the Attorney General's website where he says homeowners facing foreclosure can get the proper documents needed to fight back.
"We are offering Missourians a form letter, requesting these important documents in the correct manner and in accordance with federal law," Koster said. "This documentation will show the payment history of your loan, past assignments of your loan, and most importantly, the present ownership of your loan."
Missouri is one of 50 states investigating mishandled mortgage documents that may have led to unnecessary foreclosures.
