Suspect in Berkeley shooting turns himself in

By KWMU

St. Louis – A teen suspected of shooting a suburban St. Louis police officer turned himself in Monday.

Sixteen year old Devante Thomas had eluded police since last Wednesday when he allegedly shot a Berkely police officer.

Officials say Thomas spent time with friends at a University City home but when the homeowner learned Thomas was wanted he convinced the teen to turn himself in.

Berkeley Police Chief Frank McCall says he breathed a sigh of relief.

"No other lives put in jeopardy, no one else was injured, and we're now able to move forward and deal with the judicial process," McCall said.

Officer Donald Schultz had tried to confront Thomas about a gun the teen allegedly took from his boss.

Officials say the 28 year old policeman was shot several times but is doing well.

It could be months before prosecutors decide whether Thomas will be charged as an adult or juvenile.
