Jefferson City, MO – Tenants living in foreclosed rental properties would be protected from immediate eviction under a bill passed unanimously Tuesday by the Missouri House.
New owners will be required to allow 10 business days before beginning the eviction process.
It was sponsored by State Representative Shalon "Kiki" Curls (D, Kansas City).
"Those folks, through no fault of their own, are having to vacate the premises due to foreclosure...many of those renters have been paying their rents on time, have been following their leases as was indicated initially," Curls said
The original legislation would have given renters 90-day notices, but Curls says it was cut back due to lobbying efforts by the banking industry.
The bill has already passed the Missouri Senate and now goes to Governor Nixon.
