Jefferson City, MO – Emergency management officials are monitoring the weather as recent heavy rains have caused mild to moderate flooding in several river towns across Missouri.
"We can expect more rain over the weekend...we do know there is some low land flooding...the Mississippi River is high, it caused some of the tributary rivers to back up...right now, SEMA continues to monitor the situation," said Susie Stonner, spokesperson for the State Emergency Management Agency.
At least three dozen highways statewide have been closed due to flooding, and a parking lot used by state workers in Jefferson City is partially submerged.
On Thursday, two people had to be rescued from their car after getting caught in a flash flood southwest of Hannibal.
Mark Fuchs with the National Weather Service office in St. Louis says portions of southwest Missouri could see some major flooding.
"Down along the James River, the tributaries feeding into Table Rock Lake, those areas could see some significant runoff, and there are flash flood watches already in effect for much of that area throughout the weekend," Fuchs said.
Major flooding is not expected along the Missouri or Mississippi rivers, but Fuchs says both rivers can expect rises in the next few days.
