St. Louis – The economic downturn is making it tougher for Missouri residents to pay their taxes.
The deadline to file income taxes is Wednesday. But Michael Devine with the Internal Revenue Service in Missouri said about 120,000 people have already requested extensions.
He said many others have asked to pay on an installment plan, including some taxpayers who have never had a problem before. Devine said people having financial difficulty should contact the IRS
"There's a big difference between people who try to evade taxes and people who are having financial problems and can't pay."
Anyone who needs to work out an installment plan should call 1-800-829 1040, or go to irs.gov.
