Granite City, Ill. – Two Metro East congressmen are criticizing the use of foreign-made steel in a pipeline under construction in their area.
Pipes painted with a "Made in India" logo are being used to construct a line to transport crude oil from Canadian tar sands to Southwestern Illinois.
The materials are being shipped through Granite City, near a steel mill where workers have been laid off.
Democratic Rep. Jerry Costello said the pipes are a perfect example of how trade laws are failing workers.
Republican John Shimkus said bringing in foreign steel is a slap in the face to people laid off from local steel mills.
Keystone Pipeline project spokesman Jim Prescott says the ability of the pipe manufacturer to meet specifications regarding quality, price and quantity was why it was selected.
