Stimulus money to fund science research, jobs

By Catherine Wolf, KWMU

St. Louis, MO –

Governor Jay Nixon was in St. Louis Thursday to discuss how Missouri can use federal stimulus money to create jobs in life- and plant- sciences. He talked with leaders from the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center about how St. Louis can leverage its biotech expertise to capitalize on stimulus dollars.

"We're sitting down with research teams from all across the state and talking about what their history has been through getting dollars through the National Institutes for Health and try to begin to develop a strategy so Missouri can place itself in a position to get the top end of stimulus dollars."

Federal funding for the NIH and NSF has been decreasing in real terms for several years. Now with the stimulus, Missouri's research institutions can compete for more than two billion dollars in additional funding from the NIH.
