Property tax cuts likely for St. Louis County

By Adam Allington, KWMU

Clayton, MO – St. Louis County residents could receive a small property tax cut this year.

On Monday, County Executive Charlie Dooley asked the county council to reduce taxes by 3.5 cents per $100 of assessed valuation.

Dooley says the county would give up some money, but the move is necessary.

"We believe this is the right thing to do at the right time, to put money back in people's pockets," Dooley said.

However the average homeowner would only pocket a few extra dollars this year.

Dooley said the savings would come from cuts to debt payments and should not affect the county’s bond ratings.

He also asked the County Council not to put a $120 million dollar bond issue on the April ballot.

Among other things, that money would have paid for a new family court building, courthouse improvements and a new headquarters for the county health department.
