St. Louis Muslims call on Israelis, Palestinians to end violence

By Bill Raack, KWMU

St. Louis – Members of the Islamic community in St. Louis are decrying the continued violence between Israel and the militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip and southern Israel. Israel is conducting an air offensive to crush Hamas.

More than 370 Palestinians and four Israelis have died in the fighting so far.

Mufti Hinhajuddin Ahmed, the Imam and Director of Religious Affairs for the Islamic Foundation of Greater St. Louis, said it's time for the cycle of violence to end.

"If we can do something to stop this violence then it is our responsibility and duty as an American government that we go ahead and apply whatever pressure we can to both sides so this violence can stop instead of aiding or supporting one side over the other," Ahmed said.

Islamic officials condemned both sides in the fighting, but they said Israel's response to Hamas attacks has been disproportionate and indiscriminant.

St. Louis' Jewish Community Relations Council is calling on Palestinian leaders in Gaza to cease their attacks.
