Governor might sign special election bill, spokesman says

Chicago – A spokesman said Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich hasn't ruled out signing a bill that would strip him of his power to name a replacement for President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat.

Blagojevich spokesman Lucio Guerrero said early Monday that the governor hadn't yet seen the bill calling for a special election but might be willing to sign it.

Blagojevich was arrested last week on charges he shook down businesses seeking state deals and tried to profit from his power to choose a new senator.

Legislators are scheduled to meet Monday afternoon in special session for the first time since Blagojevich's arrest.

The session's focus was supposed to be about considering a special election to fill Obama's seat, but impeachment is likely to be the main topic of conversation.
