MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Suspicious letters containing powdery substances addressed to governors were intercepted in Missouri and at least five other states Monday.But preliminary tests found the powders sent to Missouri, Alabama, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana and Rhode Island were not harmful.
Test results on the Missouri letter are expected Tuesday.
Missouri Highway Patrol spokesman Capt. Tim Hull said the suspicious letter was found at a state mail distribution center. The state capitol remained open and operating normally Monday.
In several other states, the letters disrupted state government business, forcing some evacuations and medical tests for people who might have been exposed.
