State takeover of city schools in front of state high court

By Rachel Lippmann, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – Attorneys for the elected board of the St. Louis Public Schools will be in front of the state Supreme Court today to challenge the constitutionality of the state's takeover of the district.

A 1998 law gave a special advisory board the authority to run the district if it lost accreditation, which happened in 2007. The elected board argues that the law strips city voters of the right to choose whom they want to run their schools.

A circuit court agreed with the state that the legislature determines the power of a school board and can change it at any moment.
