St. Louis, MO – A new St. Louis Post-Dispatch poll shows voters in Missouri are opposed to plans to provide 700 billion dollars in taxpayer money to struggling financial institutions.
The poll of 800 likely voters showed that 56 percent rejected the bailout plan, with opposition coming from all political parties.
But the poll also showed that a majority of voters - 67 percent - who supported helping out the nation's housing industry.
Governor Matt Blunt is among those opposed to the plan.
"I do not think Missouri taxpayers should bail out, again, these people that have made, in individual cases, tens, hundreds of millions of dollars, and in corporate cases, billions of dollars over the past 20 years," Blunt said.
The Republican is not convinced the aid package is necessary to avert economic disaster, and he also said there is nothing the state can do to address the crisis.
