Berkeley, Mo. – An autopsy is planned on a suspect who died during a confrontation with detectives Thursday night in the St. Louis suburb of Berkeley.
Police identified the man as Craig Foster, 31. Two detectives are recovering from injuries suffered in the incident.
Police spokesman Rick Eckhard said detectives were following Foster because of possible drug charges when he suddenly stopped his car. He allegedly pulled a gun as the officers approached.
One of the detectives tackled the suspect, knocking him to the ground, while others assisted in subduing him.
Eckhard said Foster suddenly stopped fighting and became non-responsive.
Detectives tried to revive Foster, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital.
One detective was treated for bites and abrasions. The other had a broken rib.
