Back-to-school sales tax holiday underway in Missouri

By Marshall Griffin, KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – Missouri's annual back-to-school sales tax holiday has begun.

From 12:01 AM today through midnight Sunday, shoppers throughout the Show-Me State won't have to pay the state sales tax on many clothing and school supply purchases.

Rita Diemler, a senior team leader for the Target store in Jefferson City, says the sales tax holiday is one of their busier summer weekends.

"This is a time when we can get more savings for our guests here in the store, as well as other stuff that they're (going to) buy here...for example, clothing, computers, shoes, you name it, school supplies of all kinds," Diemler said.

David Griffith, spokesperson for the Missouri Department of Revenue says, though, there are limits, depending on the merchandise.

"Clothing items up to in taxable value of $100 or less, school supplies not to exceed $50 per purchase, computer software with a taxable value of $350 or less, and personal computers and computer peripheral devises that do not exceed $3500," Griffith said.

Some cities and counties in Missouri, including St. Louis, Kansas City and St. Joseph, have also suspended their local sales taxes this weekend.
