Missouri seeks to return unclaimed property

By Marshall Griffin, KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – Missouri Treasury officials are looking to reunite unclaimed property with its rightful owners.

Jewelry, $30,000 in cash, and an autographed Yogi Berra baseball card are just some of the items recently found in abandoned safe deposit boxes from various banks in Missouri.

State Treasurer and candidate for governor Sarah Steelman says the Unclaimed Property staff works hard to reunite owners with their property.

"This year we've returned over $32 million, and we're not to the end of the fiscal year yet, so it's a record-breaking year again...I believe we've broken every record of every State Treasurer since 1985," Steelman said.

Items that go unclaimed for two years are auctioned off.

"We keep the money from that auction, and still continue to look for the rightful owners," Steelman said.

The state of Missouri currently possesses over $500 million in unclaimed property.
