Wash-U chancellor apologizes for controversy, but Schlafly will still get honorary degree

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis – Washington University Chancellor Mark Wrighton apologized Wednesday for the anguish created by a decision to honor Phyllis Schlafly, but the conservative activist will still get an honorary degree at Friday's commencement ceremony.

Twice this week, protesters gathered at Wrighton's home and office.

Schlafly says her detractors are "a bunch of losers."

She earned both her bachelor's and law degree from Washington University.

She said feminists are still angry because she led the successful fight to stop passage of the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s.
