St. Louis – According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly twenty percent of American adults smoke cigarettes. Among immigrant communities that rate is generally much higher.
For the 50,000 or more Bosnians who live in St. Louis, health experts estimate between 50 and 70 percent smoke.
In order to reduce that figure, the St. Louis County Health Department has launched a smoking cessation campaign that is equal parts preventative medicine and cultural anthropology.
