Bill in State Senate would partially repeal Missouri's motorcycle helmet law

By Marshall Griffin, KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – Another attempt is being made in the Missouri General Assembly to allow motorcyclists to ride without helmets.

This year's attempt to repeal the helmet law is similar to last year's, as it would only apply to those 21 years of age or older. But in order to make it more palatable to more lawmakers, this year's bill would require helmet use if a motorcyclist is on an interstate highway.

State Senator Bill Stouffer (R, Napton) chairs the Senate Transportation Committee. He supports the bill.

In my mind, we have the majority imposing their will on a minority we don't require helmets in skis, bicycles, horses, (or) any other activity to me it's a matter of choice, Stouffer said.

But that's not enough for MoDOT Director Pete Rahn. He addressed the issue during his State of Transportation speech on February 6th.

Deaths among motorcyclists are up, and I urge you to never add to these deaths by repealing Missouri's helmet law, Rahn said.

Rahn told lawmakers that the state needs a renewed focus on motorcycle safety.

The bill is sponsored by State Senator Luann Ridgeway (R, Smithville).
