St. Louis – There will be two major shutdowns along Interstate 64 this weekend.
The freeway will close in both directions at Kingshighway late Friday so workers can demolish the old overpass there.
Gateway Constructors spokesman Dan Galvin said it's best to avoid driving in that area. However temporary off-ramps will be set up to keep traffic moving.
"It won't be as significant a detour as we've had in the past where you have to find another street, but this one is bound to be congested," Galvin said. "Any time you take a freeway down to one lane, that's going to cause some backups."
Galvin said I-64 will reopen before rush hour Monday. But the freeway will close again next weekend so workers can finish the demolition of the Kingshighway bridge.
Also, early Saturday morning, MODOT will close the westbound Boone bridge between St. Louis and St. Charles Counties.
Workers will replace rusty structural metal that inspectors found in August.
The westbound Boone Bridge will reopen Sunday night, but another closure is scheduled for the following weekend.
