Columbia, Mo. – The University of Missouri Board of Curators voted Thursday to let the University of Missouri-Columbia drop the word Columbia' from its name.
The designation was added when the University of Missouri system was created in 1963.
Chancellor Brady Deaton said the word Columbia gave the impression that Mizzou is a regional campus.
However representatives of the campuses in Kansas City and St. Louis opposed the change.
Mizzou will still use the Columbia name for official purposes, such as contracts.
