St. Louis – The president of the transit agency Metro apologized Thursday for comments a television reporter caught on tape.
After a recent interview with a television reporter, Larry Salci called the reporter a "clown," and said he fits right in to St. Louis. Salci also used an expletive as he walked away.
Salci said Thursday he does not know exactly what he said while the camera was rolling, but is sorry about it.
"This was a mental error," Salci said. "It was mine. I take full responsibility."
Salci said his comments were aimed more at the media and its coverage of Metro, and not all of St. Louis.
Salci said he remains committed to staying in St. Louis and leading Metro.
Salci's apology comes as the agency is in the midst of a major lawsuit. It's suing a group of contractors it claims are responsible for millions in cost overruns on the MetroLink extension.
Metro also wants St. Louis County residents to approve another half-cent sales tax, to fund more light rail expansion and provide the agency with more funding.
The St. Louis County Council is deciding whether to put the issue on the February ballot.
