City might put more 'green' requirements on projects

By Tom Weber, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – St. Louis aldermen are moving to put more energy efficiency requirements on future municipal building projects.

St. Louis added a law earlier this year that requires most new city-owned buildings to meet certain LEED-ratings, which means they're built with energy efficiency and green' building in mind.

But that law only applies to new buildings - so what if City Hall needs a new roof or ventilation system?

Alderman Fred Wessels has new legislation that would require bigger projects on existing buildings to also meet certain efficiency standards.

"Wwe should be leading by example and this bill will help us do that," Wessels said Friday, in an interview. "And the other, I think it's in our financial best interests to look at the cost-effectiveness of the systems we're putting into these buildings."

The legislation was introduced Friday and now heads to an aldermanic committee.
