Alton, Ill. – A man accused of threatening the life of Illinois state Senator Bill Haine has been freed from jail to get treatment for what's being described as an aggressive brain tumor.
Steve Rain, 55, was released Wednesday from the Madison County Jail. He'd been jailed since being charged last month with a felony count of threatening a public official.
Authorities say Rain was arrested after someone overheard him making the threat against the Democratic lawmaker from Alton. Rain is also from Alton; his son says his father was diagnosed with cancer in March.
Rain is barred from contacting Haine or his family and must submit medical reports to the court every two weeks that show the need to continue his furlough.
