St. Louis, MO – St. Louis Fire Chief Sherman George has agreed to begin the process of reviewing promotions in his department.
George had placed a hold on promotions after allegations of racial bias on a 2004 officer's test. Those allegations were overturned by a judge in May, prompting St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay to direct the chief earlier this week to begin the promotion process, indicating there would be consequences if he didn't.
Charles Bryson is the Mayor's Deputy Chief of Staff.
"He had some very good ideas and very good thoughts and we certainly are going to take them under consideration when we do promotional testing, or perhaps any testing within the fire department in the future."
Chief George says that he is not concerned about a backlash from the Fireman's Institute for Racial Equality or Firefighters Local 73.
