St. Louis, MO. – St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay has ordered city engineers to inspect seven bridges, including the Eads Bridge across the Mississippi River.
The bridge that collapsed Wednesday in Minneapolis was a truss design.
The Eads Bridge is not a truss bridge, but looks similar. Three other pedestrian truss bridges will be inspected in the city, as well as three bridges that are known as fracture critical bridges.
Mayor Slay says everyone should learn from the tragedy in Minnesota.
"When this happens it really heightens your level of scrutiny in terms of what we're doing just to double check," Mayor Slay said. "So we're double-checking our bridges and we've been assured by MO-DOT that they're double-checking theirs as well."
The mayor says it will be critical for MO-DOT to get additional revenue for
long-term funding for maintenance and construction.
