Two state workers plead guilty to identity theft

By AP/KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – A former state employee and another woman have pleaded guilty to stealing identities of citizens from Department of Revenue records.

Erica Kelley and Brenda Adams, both of Jefferson City, face maximum sentences of 20 years in prison. They were among seven people accused in a May 31st indictment of using personal data stolen from Missourians to set up fake telephone accounts for state prison inmates.

Kelley was accused of using her position to steal Social Security numbers, names and birth dates of Missourians. The 28-year-old was one of three state employees accused in the scheme.

Those accounts allegedly racked up more than $80 thousand in charges before they were shut down for nonpayment.
