St. Louis, MO. – Missouri Governor Matt Blunt wants a site along the Current River to become a state park.
The 850-acre area was once the corporate retreat for the Alton Box Company.
It includes recreational facilities that are included on the National Register of Historic Places.
While the Department of Conservation currently manages the area, Governor Blunt wants the Department of Natural Resources to take over and create a recreational area once more.
Sue Holst is a spokeswoman for the DNR.
"It has a lot of history to it; it can also be used for recreational facilities, plus it gives us a state park on the Current River, which we do not have at this point," Holst said.
Holst says there's not specific time frame for transferring management of the land to the state DNR.
But she says discussions between the two departments have started.
