Bridge overhaul project delayed

By AP/KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – Hundreds of Missouri's worst bridges will stay that way a while longer.

MO-DOT Director Pete Rahn says repair work on 800 of the state's substandard bridges will be delayed until September or October.

A contract was originally scheduled to be awarded for the work this month. The delay gives MO-DOT more time to answer legal questions about the size of the performance bonds contractors must put up.

The bridge repair project calls for 80% of the substandard bridges to be fixed by 2012. Two bidders have put in on the repair work, which is what state law requires for such a project to proceed.
