St. Louis – The Missouri State Medical Association plans to sue to block a new state law that allows midwives to deliver babies at home.
Doctors and hospitals generally oppose the practice of midwifery. They say it's unsafe and fraught with liability problems.
However in the lawsuit, the group plans to argue that the legislation violates the state constitution's ban on bills containing multiple subjects because the midwife provision is part of an insurance law.
Advocates for midwives say the medical association should tackle more pressing health care concerns.
