Jefferson City, MO – Eleven people died in traffic crashes in Missouri during the Memorial Day holiday period. That's one fewer than last year.
The Missouri Highway Patrol investigated 325 accidents over the holiday weekend. Captain Tim Hull says driver inattention contributed to a lot of them.
"[We're] still seeing a lot of one-vehicle accidents where the right side of the tires of the vehicle drops off the edge of the pavement the driver tends to overcorrect, and then the vehicles goes off one side of the roadway or the other," Hull said.
Hull says four of those who died were not wearing seat belts. The fatalities also included an ATV driver in Iron County who was not wearing a helmet. He was struck from behind by another ATV, the driver of which is believed by authorities to have been drunk.
Also, 227 arrests were made for driving while intoxicated.
