Task force speaks with Virginia Tech officials about campus safety

By Marshall Griffin, KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – Missouri's Campus Security Task Force met in Jefferson City on Thursday with Virginia State Police and federal ATF agents investigating the mass shootings at Virginia Tech last month.

The goal was to help plan strategies for keeping college students in Missouri safe from similar attacks.

Higher Education Commissioner Robert Stein says one thing they learned was the need to have an emergency response plan in place beforehand.

"Something as simple as after an incident, having to gather evidence, and the amount of evidence that's needed, a place that you have to have to store that evidence," Stein said Thursday. "Obviously in this situation, the amount of evidence was of such magnitude that it was a real challenge, where would they store that evidence?"

The meeting was closed to both the public and the media, because the Virginia Tech shootings are still being investigated. The campus task force was created by Gov. Blunt after the Virginia Tech shootings.
