St. Louis – One of the area's largest construction firms has withdrawn its bid to work on the St. Louis Cardinals' Ballpark Village project.
Clayco had been interested in becoming the general contractor for the $387 million development, adjacent to Busch Stadium.
But Clayco chairman and chief executive Bob Clark said the firm decided to focus on other projects, including the Bottle District north of downtown.
"Obviously there's a conflict there, so, we love the Ballpark Village, we think it's going to be exciting for St. Louis and we're tremendously excited that the market, we think, can handle both significant projects."
The Cardinals have said that they want the first phase of Ballpark Village to be completed by July of 2009, when they host Major League Baseball's All-Star Game.
Neither the Cardinals nor its partner, the Cordish Company, returned calls for comment.
