St. Louis, MO – The U.S. House on Monday approved legislation that would put Harriett Woods' name on the post office in University City.

Woods was a former Missouri Lieutenant Governor who died in February of leukemia at the age of 79. She was the first woman to serve in that job and was active in getting more women into politics. She also was a commentator for KWMU.

After being introduced by Missouri Congressman Russ Carnahan, all other Missouri congressmen, except for Todd Akin, signed on as a co-sponsor. The measure passed on a voice vote and now heads to the Senate.

The post office in question is at 561 Kingsland and would be named the "Harriett F. Woods Post Office Building."
