St. Louis, MO – The Missouri Athletic Club is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The building, at 4th and Washington, was completed in 1916 after the original building was destroyed by fire.
"It was designed by William B. Ittner, on of the foremost architects of the time," noted club president Rick Lodewyck. "And the MAC logo has the cherry diamond - it's a diamond placed in a diagonal pattern that repeats itself in the brickwork.
"It's a very attractive old building."
Lodewyck says the club applied for the National Register designation last summer.
OTHER SALVAGE EFFORTS
Meanwhile, a group that's trying to save old buildings in Missouri will release its list today of this year's most endangered historic places.
One of those on the Alliance for Historic Preservation's list is the Mullanphy Emigrant Home in Old North St. Louis.
It's the last physical link in the city to the migration of immigrants in the 1870's, but it has sustained major damage during two severe wind storms in the past year.
A group trying to raise money to stabilize the building will host a benefit concert Wednesday night at Christ Church Cathedral.
