St. Louis – The nickname for the University of Missouri at St. Louis could soon change from the "Rivermen" to the "Tritons".
That's the name that has been recommended by a committee that studied the school's mascot identity.
The "Rivermen" name has been in place for 41 years, but Curt Coonrod, the vice provost of student affairs at UM-St. Louis, said efforts to change the mascot have surfaced periodically for more than a decade.
"There was probably a lot more concern about the term 'riverwomen', that you know it was a bit derogatory," Coonrod said. "I'm not saying everybody but I mean I think that was some of the things that were, were discussed."
The university's board of curators must approve the mascot name change. The issue will be discussed by the board on May 31st.
