Monument dedicated for killed Cahokia police officer

By AP/KWMU

Cahokia, Ill. – There was a ceremony Tuesday night in the Metro-East town of Cahokia to dedicate a new monument for a police officer who killed in the line of duty last year.

Jeremy Chambers, 26, was the first officer in the village's history to die on duty. He was killed in a car crash.

Officials erected a nearly seven-foot-tall marble memorial in his honor near the Holy Family Catholic Church downtown.

More than 500 people attended the ceremony Tuesday night. Friends and family remembered Chambers for his selflessness and willingness to help people in need.

A St. Louis man has been charged with drunken driving and reckless homicide in connection with the crash that killed Chambers.
