Convicted attorney jailed pending sentencing

By AP/KWMU

East St. Louis, Ill. – A Metro East attorney has surrendered to be jailed pending his June sentencing for trying to blackmail his former wife with naked pictures of her sister.

Gary Peel turned himself in to federal marshals Monday in East St. Louis, as ordered by a federal judge there.

Last month, a jury convicted the Glen Carbon man of bankruptcy fraud, obstructing justice and two counts of possessing child pornography.

Prosecutors say Peel had an affair with his teenage sister-in-law in 1974, then tried to use sexually explicit photos of her to pressure his wife into dropping her financial demands during their 2003 divorce.

Peel filed for bankruptcy in 2005 after a protracted dispute over their financial settlement.
