Jefferson City, MO. – About a dozen St. Louis public school students opposed to a potential state takeover of their district traveled to Jefferson City Wednesday.
They met with the head of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Commissioner Kent King.
Kaylan Holloway, a 15 year old sophmore at St. Louis's Soldan High School, says on a scale of one to ten, their meeting with King ranks at the bottom.
Holloway and the other students present objected to the language in a DESE press release.
"We believe that you should not have 'obstacles,'" Holloway said. "We don't need words 'we believe' and 'should not.' We need words of certainty. We are children. We are the future. I'm sick of them giving us these words that don't make sense."
DESE spokesman Jim Morris says the decision to discredit the St. Louis school district is not the department's to make, although the commissioner recommended the creation of the Transitional Board.
It will replace the St. Louis School Board if the district loses its accreditation.
