McCaskill calls for meetings on veterans' treatment

By Tom Weber, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill said today she plans to hold a series of town hall meetings across Missouri for veterans. That comes in the wake of the scandal at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital.

McCaskill sits on the Armed Services Committee which has been questioning top defense officials this week about the matter. She read a letter during a hearing yesterday from a Missouri soldier about his medical treatment as a double amputee. And McCaskill says she wants to hear from others,

"What are their frustrations? Is it how long they wait for service? Is it that their ratings are wrong, the process of getting rated? I think we've heard a number of problems, and we heard a number of problems. And we want to make sure we do it in a way that we can move around the state so the veterans don't have to travel too far."

McCaskill says she doesn't know when the town hall meetings will be. She's also co-sponsoring legislation that calls for improved conditions for how soldiers are treated.
