Effort to make Soldier's Memorial federal property passes House

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – The U.S. House passed legislation Monday to force a study of whether the Soldier's Memorial in downtown St. Louis should be part of the National Parks System.

Right now, the memorial's $185,000 annual budget is paid by the city of St. Louis.

It was originally built in the 30s to honor veterans of World War I.

The legislation was sponsored in the House by Congressman Lacy Clay, who called the monument an "architectural masterpiece" that honors veterans. It now heads to the U.S. Senate, where Sen. Claire McCaskill will sponsor the bill.
