Washington – The U.S. Senate campaigns of Democrat Claire McCaskill and Republican Jim Talent might have collected more money than federal law allows during the 2006 election.
The Federal Election Commission has asked both campaigns to clarify contributions that may be excessive, prohibited or both.
Three letters sent this month to Talent's campaign say he may have collected more than $185,000 in improper donations from more than 100 donors.
A similar letter to McCaskill's campaign says she may have received about $28,000 over federal limits from 19 donors.
McCaskill defeated Talent in the race. A McCaskill spokeswoman said the campaign is complying with the request.
A spokesman for Talent's campaign could not be reached.
