Jefferson City, MO. – A former chief justice of the Missouri Supreme Court has died.
Judge Charles Blackmar died Friday night in Florida after a brief illness.
He was 84.
Blackmar was chief justice from July 1989 until July 1991. He retired in April 1992 but continued serving as a senior judge, hearing cases through last fall.
Blackmar sat in on the hearing over a law that required voters to show a photo
I.D. at the polls.
While questioning attorneys, Blackmar waved his out-of-date driver's license to the courtroom and said the law would no longer allow him to cast a ballot.
The Supreme Court eventually tossed the law as unconstitutional.
Funeral services for Blackmar are set for Friday at Country Club Christian Church in Kansas City.
